Bob Dukes, diffident hero of the "Our Man in Mazita" series, is a recently appointed and inexperienced diplomat working for Her Majesty's Britannic Government in the early sixties on the island of Mazita off the East African coast. As well as learning his new duties, he is faced with the task of being a single father to his three children. Bob's first official task is to organize a dinner for his boss, the Governor Designate of Mazita, who wishes to establish cordial relations with local bigwigs drawn from the many different cultures.
Add to this minefield a reluctant first course and you will see why readers enjoy this story.
The satirical undertones of this story make it suitable for both adults and young adults.

Beauootiful Soooop! Our Man in Mazita Book 1 edition by Katie Penryn Literature Fiction eBooks

This is Katie Penryn's first published story. From her short bio we learn that, "Katie Penryn spent a happy and somewhat wild childhood on the East African coast during the fifties and sixties..."

I had met Katie, albeit online. She was having problems getting her blog to work. Owning more than 40 myself, I'm thinking, how hard can it be? Never the less, her bio intrigued me so I bought her story, "Fertile Turtle," not having a clue of where it would lead.

I must say, as it turns out, the troubled blogster is a formidable writer. A surprisingly brilliant writer, and one that others could learn something from.

Katie, as I learned, is something of an animal lover, so the setup for her first work is how the hero, Bob Dukes goes about saving a tasty sea turtle from being made into soup. Not that Bob minds so terribly the resultant product. It's just that his kids find out about it and throw a fit. So Bob has to save the turtle in order to keep peace in the family. Yes, the turtle is saved, of course, but it's how the turtle is saved that makes for a delightful and humorous ending.

Well, and good, you may say, but where's the meat of the story? The story behind the story lies in Penryn's absolutely fantastic gift of coloring the tale with her wealth of experience with of what it's like to live amongst the royal gentry on the fabled African coast.

The story is set on the Island of Mazita and hero Dukes is a diplomat of sorts, working for the crown. Pretty nifty gig! Rather Bondesque in a Thunderball sort of way.

The brilliance of the tale is her eloquent descriptions of the times, places, and things royal and otherwise, and the little understood machinations of diplomacy.

For a poor southern boy such as my humble self, it's like a dip into a rich Brunswick stew. A delight in every bite. I read greedily, I admit.

The Fertile Turtle is not only entertaining, but a learning experience as well, and a study in how to do a first Kindle book up right. I predict that this girl is going places.

Consider Katie Penryn's first Kindle book, "The Fertile Turtle" a collector's item. It would be wise to grab it, read it, and say you were there at the start of what will be a fantastic series of stories and novels, if she pursues her talents. She's got what it takes!

Beauootiful Soooop! Our Man in Mazita Book 1 edition by Katie Penryn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I purchased the first of Katie Penryn's novels, "Our Man in Manzita", to read on holiday, and I am glad that I did!
I have thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in the fun-filled adventures of Bob and his three children living East Africa!
I highly recommend this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut from Katie Penryn. Appropriate choice of feature and imagery quickly establishes time and place. The author has no trouble breathing life into her characters by dint of id and idiosyncrasy and using her storyteller's skill to capture the reader's wish to be imaginatively absorbed. The cunning use of extra-sensory assistance sustains interest and amusement. Altogether the story encapsulates all the elements that give it life wit, pace, thrall and deft denouement. I hope that Katie will be good to her word and offer a new installment in the 'Our man from Mazita' series. Highly recommended.
I chose this rating because of all of the vivid details it had in this book. I want to read more in this series but it costs money. =(
A short story featuring the inexperienced diplomat, Bob Dukes, who is thrust into a job without much knowledge and who's first task puts him in a difficult position. With some help from an unexpected source he sorts it out to the satisfaction of all concerned. If you want a light, witty story that is easy to read and leaves you with a smile on your face, this is the one for you. Five stars.
This is an enjoyable read here, but alas too short. I loved both the writing and
the satire associated with diplomatic posts and those in Africa ,such as this, held
my interest. The author has great potential and her words flow beautifully.
This short story is a delight to read. The author's background of growing up in East Africa is apparent as she expertly blends in local color with a charming tale sure to delight readers of all ages. I look forward to reading more books by Katie Penryn's "Our Man in Mazita" series.
Seems to me this book is probably miscategorized as being in the horror/occult genre since tale is more of the cozy family variety about a British Government official at the time of Africa's independence long ago being asked to put authentic turtle soup on the dinner's menu much to the chagrin of both himself and his three children by name of Poppy, Suze and Charlie. Outstanding dialogue and well-developed characters won me over in this short novella, and I'm certainly interested in acquiring more books in the series as a result. Very good book!
