This tender and unusual modern love story, written in a style peppered with literary allusions and riddles, is Russian novelist, Masha Spivak's first foray into English. Katia, born in the old USSR, has two dreams Love, and the Freedom of the West. Although already married, she wants to marry a foreigner and embarks in the 90s on a passionate affair with a Dutchman, only to be used by him. Then in 2009 her husband leaves her for a younger, bustier piece of eye-candy and she is alone - husbandless, childless and in Moscow. A recuperative trip to the States to visit her oldest friend, Dora, who emigrated in the early 90s, leads to Katia finding true and mutual love with her best friend's husband. Katia ends up lost in a moral labyrinth, trying to cope with her ethical dilemma as she fights her love for Lev. At the same time, she supports another good friend Vava, who dies unexpectedly quickly of cancer, while reflecting on the memories of her indomitable grandmother. The finale blends past, present and future, with plans for murder and suicide, before Katia learns what is most important in life and what true freedom means. A World Elsewhere Masha Spivak 9780957338425 Books Reviews
A friend suggested I read this but had I known it was another so called heroic tale of woe from a victim of failed socialism, I would not have wasted my pennies. We are think our lives are fascinating but in the end, tawdry sex is only interesting to the participants. So men cheat on her, then she goes and steals someone else's husband, sounds a petulant, selfish reaction to pain. Yawn. The other reviews on here are likely friends & family. Avoid.
Katia is a beautiful, talented, and witty woman. She is deeply in love, and her love is so overwhelming that it fills and illuminates her whole life. The love is mutual, two kindred souls have finally found each other, and Katia's chosen one is absolutely smitten with her.
Looks like a quite boring happy ending, but wait, it is only the start of the novel. Our heroine's loved one is married. To make things worse, he is married to her best friend, and they have lovely twins. So Katia faces a terrible dilemma. To betray her and Dora's twenty plus years' friendship, to ruin her friend's family? Or to be generous and magnanimous, to give up her lover? But that means to betray herself, her love, and all that is dear to her.
Katia was born and grew up in the Soviet Union, and lives in today's Russia, so she went through all the experiences of Russia's communist and totalitarian past, as well as its wild capitalist present. Half-Russian, half-Jewish, living all her life in Russia and desparately earning for another life in the free world - A World Elsewhere, searching for true love, Katia is an extraordinary, lively, and charming character. You want to understand the enigmatic Russian soul? Here it is. Anna Karenina, Rodion Raskolnikov, and Natasha Rostova - you will find them all in our heroine.
Start reading, look at the surrounding world through Katia's eyes, and, as the story unfolds, you will find yourself unable to tear yourself away from the book, moving with Katia from the heights of elation to the abysses of hopelessness, and finally discovering her true self.
What else to say? The novel is set against the backdrop of Moscow, Amsterdam, and Boston. Characters are clearly cut, amazingly real and alive. The narrative is witty and full of allusions.
Give Masha Spivak's book a try, and you won't regret.
